The Elysia Skye Breast Cancer Organization was started in July 2008 by breast cancer survivor, Elysia Skye. We are creating a global community, working towards a decrease in the risk of cancer through PREVENTION. This means education, empowerment and an understanding of the physical effect of a positive perspective. Our mission is to educate young women and men on cancer prevention, to raise awareness about cancer in women under 40 and to share a message of love, laughter and gratitude during trauma and illness. We also raise funds and act as a donation platform for those affected by cancer at any age.

Bills, groceries and an effortless recovery for unexpected breast

reconstruction

This is your ChipIn page for Bills, groceries and an effortless recovery for unexpected breast reconstruction. Here you can share information about your events with your friends, family, and contributors.

Twice the bank for your buck!

Good morning friends,

I am heading off to have surgery any minute now. In the spirit of Gratitude and giving/receiving, I would like to ask that if/when you contribute, you leave a note with your favorite charity so when I am back on my feet, I will match your donation to that cause. I am incredibly thankful to the wonderful support team I have, and I know not everyone is as lucky as me. Next time I write, it will be behind a new set of ta-ta’s! From the OG’s, to the silicone pair to my new saline C’s, third time’s the charm, right?

Thank you again, with open arms, sending and receiving love and light,
Elysia Skye

My Boob Sprung A Leak

Hello,

Thank you for coming to my chipin site. I am not always good at asking, well, not when it is for me. But recently I found out that one of my breast implants from my breast reconstruction of 2006 has sprung a leak. Apparently less than 3% of implants leak, and mine wanted to be in the cool kids club.

For those who don’ know me, I was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer shortly after my 24th birthday. I had a double mastectomy, chemo, radiation, and multiple reconstructive surgeries.

A few weeks ago I started getting a terrible pain in my right breast and armpit. Worried, I went to my oncologist who discovered a file that had been overlooked from December, showing the implant rupture. Since it has been leaking for over 8 months, I feel it is urgent to have it replaced as soon as possible.

On Monday August 30th, I’ll be swapping out my silicone implants for saline implants, as well as fat grafting to create a realistic feel around the implant. My doctor asked me to take a few weeks off work and aside from my monthly bills, the medical bills will be outstanding.

Thank you so much for reading my story and contributing what you can. To learn more about me and the organization I created for women under 40 who get cancer, visit www.laughaboutcancer.org

Love and Gratitude,
Elysia Skye

Lifestyles Health/Wellness
Written by Elysia Skye  | Friday, 01 October 2010 – 22:29:12
Last year we interviewed  Elysia Skye for our October issue in support of breast cancer awareness. Elysia is back and wants to share her secrets to survival and what she thinks are the key to prevention of not only cancer, but disease and stress in general. She submitted an interesting and humorous (of course!) account of her ride through emotional growth for your reading pleasure…By the time this issue is published, Mercury will have just gone out of retrograde. For those of you who are Virgos, Saturn has been sitting on your sun for over two years and it has been a rocky road. For the rest of us, there’s this thing called life. What a pain in the ass!

I turned 28 a few weeks ago (I’m a Leo… of course!) and all the cliché thoughts of being in my late 20’s ran through my head. “I thought I’d be married/rich/have kids/own a huge house, have my career off the ground and be successful BY NOW. The irony is, success is only measured by how happy you truly are. So then I had to take step back and really truly ask myself, “Am I happy?” “Am I afraid of failure?” “What am I worried about?” “Am I angry?” The more I thought about it, I realized I had felt spiritually disconnected and was forgetting to breathe. Your breath is your true connection to the divine (be it God, your higher self, whatever you’d like to think of it as). I don’t think I’ve been breathing all year! I hadn’t felt this overwhelmed since I had breast cancer…

When I was 24, I was diagnosed with stage 3-breast cancer. I had two evil tumors living inside my body. One of them migrated to the northeast—i.e. my armpits, causing me to go through chemotherapy because they had invaded my lymph nodes. My doctor told me if I didn’t have surgery Friday, I’d be dead in a month. So I had surgery Monday (I had a trip to Palm Springs planned for the weekend after all!). Then I went through 18 weeks of chemo. One Mohawk and a marijuana license later, this baldie was ready for radiation. Everyday for 6 weeks, I had to wake up at 6am, to drive to Burbank and lay on a table for 10 minutes. Before I went to work each morning, I would massage utter cream on my right breast and close my eyes for 15 minutes before I had to get up and drive to Beverly Hills for work. Those 15 minutes were the highlight of my day.

Slowly but surely my hair grew back, my period came back (yay babies one day!!! But not when I’m 28 despite my earthly plan!), and my LIFE came back. Since then, I’ve been dealing with this side effect called lymphadema (swelling of the limb due to lymph node trauma). But if that was the only problem I had after cancer, so be it. After a lymphadema surgery last year, I’ve been able to keep it under control.

So now what, why aren’t I “successful”? What was missing? What did I still need to learn or be reminded of? That is key. Because we almost always know what is truly best for us. Our instincts, 99% of the time, guide us in the right direction; it’s just up to us if we’re really listening. And I wasn’t listening. I had forgotten how to manifest, how to feel joy within myself, and how to just BE.

Once I acknowledged that what I missing was my own fault, I began to put the pieces back together. The point being, I became very present. Anytime I started to feel frustrated, be it money, a relationship, work, a relative, I would take a breath and think about how good it feels to breathe. I would think about the tips of my fingers and toes. Could I feel them? What did they feel like and what were they touching? I’d think about the smells in the air, and see the beauty in the surrounding flowers, or lizard on the sidewalk. I know this sounds like a bunch of hippy non-sense, but it is SO much better to smile at a lizard than to be mad at your grandmother! In fact, it’s a whole different world of emotion! It is coming from a present place of gratitude. Otherwise you might let what you think is your life, get the best of your emotions.

Emotions are the spirit’s connection to the ego. Some would call themselves “emotional” others would call them whiners. Whatever the case may be, the idea is to not let your emotions take the lead in your relationship with yourself. When you find yourself feeling angry, or fearful, or sad, it is important to remember that you have total control over how you feel in that moment, and that you are actually choosing to be negative. This is not how we were designed to live. Negative emotions build up like tar and manifest a sickness inside the body. Worse than actually getting upset, is holding in how you feel. Imagine an atom bomb about to go off, but it doesn’t, so its insides just begin to rot and deteriorate. The best thing would have been if the bomb (your negative thoughts and emotions) had never been created in the first place, but it is very difficult to learn to control your thinking.

I wish I had done that in 2005. I was buying a condo after quitting my job, my boyfriend cheated on me and it was the messiest situation in relationship history (use your imagination) and in the meantime, I was producing a table read for a film I was trying to raise money for. My relationship with my Father and Grandmother was very unhealthy, and I was holding the opinions of my peers and co-workers, more important than my own opinions about MYSELF. Despite feeling and thinking about these negative things, I was keeping how I was feeling inside. It built up, it corroded, it was ticking and ticking in my chest, my heart couldn’t handle it, and then I got sick, right where my heart sits and my breathe was trapped.

Maybe a few good screams might have prevented me from stage 3 cancer, but probably not. It was how I handled my thinking that pushed it so far in the first place. Sure there are genetics (my grandma had very mild cancer in one breast, but I was negative for the b.r.a.c. gene test), and there’s environment (especially if you’re breathing in smog in L.A. and eating processed foods) and these things are almost unavoidable. So what you can do to prevent yourself from getting cancer (or any kind of illness brought on by negative thoughts and emotions aka STRESS) is adjust your way of thinking. Change your perception of how you see every bad situation. Adjust it to the point where a situation is no longer perceived even as bad. See it as more of a challenge you would rather not take.

For example, I’m sure many of you are worried about money right now. You can’t pay your bills, creditors are calling, or your relationship is on the rocks, your job is unstable, if you even have one. These situations are terrible, and they make us feel bad. So when you are confronted with an uncomfortable situation, your body tends to tense up. Spiritual teacher and Author, Eckhart Tolle explains this as the physical side of fear. He says:

“Research has shown that strong emotions even cause changes in the biochemistry of the body. These biochemical changes represent the physical or material aspect of the emotion. Of course, you are not usually conscious of all your thought patterns and it is often only through watching your emotions that you can bring them into awareness. If you cannot feel your emotions, or you are cut off from them, you will begin to experience them on a purely physical level as a physical problem or symptom.”

All negative emotions are derived from fear or anger, just as all positive emotions are derived from love. If you break it down, and truly dissect what it is you’re upset about, you will find it is because you are afraid of something (how you appear, your reputation, loss, death) or that you are angry about something (you’re a victim, you’ve been taken advantage of, you weren’t treated fairly). When you need to react to a situation, it is always better to come from a place of love, even when you think you were wronged.

Look, I’m a Jew who was raised Buddhist, so now is the time when I bring up Mr. JC himself (because why not?). If someone came up to him and punched him in the face, he wouldn’t get angry. He would love them and forgive them for they are just like him, only they don’t know how to process their thoughts, so they take things personally, and their ego has their panties in a bunch. When you choose to let the outside world affect you, you are giving into the egos temptations. Your sexy little ego, with a bottle of wine, fancy shoes and eyes like the sun, luring you into its trap – then BAM! You’re upset about something and you’ve begun the manifestation of physical pain in the body.

My advice is to make a reminder for yourself. Whether it’s a post-it note, or an alarm that goes off on your cell phone, remember to not get wrapped up in the moment. Sometimes one angry moment, can turn into a lifetime of disease. My very wise friend Gary Renard was teaching a group of us about forgiveness lessons in “A Course In Miracles”.  He said, “The Holy Spirit is within. Wisdom will be there for you when you need it.” When I find myself in a challenging situation, I remind myself of that mantra. I trust in the source energy that created me in the first place, and remember that I am taken care of if I choose inner peace over suffering.

It is possible to be joyous about all of life’s dealings. I looked at cancer as an exciting challenge, and an endless world of teachings that I knew I would eventually put down on paper. My book: I Got My Tits Done In Beverly Hills: The True Story Of A 24 Year Old Breast Cancer Survivor will be available in the next year. In the meantime, the live version of it goes up on October 22nd and 29th 2009 at the IO West Theatre in Hollywood, CA. Please check www.laughaboutcancer.org for more information.

If you find yourself feeling lost, angry, fearful or just plain empty, I strongly recommend Renard’s The Disappearance Of The Universe and Tolle’s The Power Of Now. Join us for charity madness at the CIA (California Institute of Abnormal Arts) in North Hollywood on MONDAY APRIL 20th at 830pm. 11334 Burbank Blvd in North Hollywood, CA. Cover is $10 and a portion of the proceeds benefit The Elysia Skye Breast Cancer Organization and LaughAboutCaner.org. We have many projects in the works that needs funding and The Changing are rocking out for a good cause (maybe for the first and last time). The night will also be filmed for an art and music scene documentary, so the more the merrier.

If you’ve never been to CIA, it is an amazing museum. And yes, there is a full bar. During the night, we will also be doing a locks for love hair donation, so if you’re thinking about shaving your head, or want to donate cash to make your friend do it, there’s never a better time than on 4/20! This is not your typical quiet peaceful benefit event. If it’s been a while since you’ve been drunk on a Monday, we’re going to fix that.

Love and Gratitude,

Elysia Skye

We have teamed up with Weisberg Yoffe to promote their foundation. In return, they are also supporting us.

Please visit their website, support their cause, and share these books with children and families in your life. For a special discount, visit their website.

Ken Yoffe and Ellen Weisberg adopted their daughter, Emily, from Chongqing, China at the age of 11 months. In honor of Emily, they co-authored and illustrated a children’s geography book entitled “All Across China” (Chipmunkapublishing, 2009). The book was also written in memory of one of the mothers in their adoption group, who passed away at the age of 39 from breast cancer. Their friend, as well as others close to them who died from the disease, inspired Ken and Ellen to donate the personal proceeds for “All Across China” to breast cancer research, support, and awareness. They are also committed to doing the same with the personal proceeds for Ellen’s young adult novel, “Gathering Roses” (Chipmunkapublishing, 2007) and Ken and Ellen’s children’s geography book, “All Across Canada” (Chipmunkapublishing, 2008). In addition, a portion of personal proceeds are going toward heart disease research and Parkinson’s and dystonia research. For more information about these books, all of which are being sold at a discount on their authors’ website, please visit www.weisberg-yoffe.org .

Happy New Year! We are happy to give you for the first time ever a complimentary viewing of LOSE WEIGHT WITH CANCER! Normally we charge $10 to mail you the DVD. If you enjoy the movie, please make a contribution to the charity on the SHOP page and share the link with your friends and family.

Also, on Monday January 5th, Elysia celebrated the new year by getting her nipples tattood! Even though she did skin grafting to give her breasts a normal nipple feel, now she has her original color. Sorry, no photos for the site, but there will be some in her book I GOT MY TITS DONE IN BEVERLY HILLS, so keep checking back for publishing info. If you are currently going through reconstruction and would like info on the process, please feel free to contact Elysia at contact at (symbol) laugh about cancer dot org (we have to spell it out so spammers can’t use filters to steal addresses – how silly!).

Additionally, her arm is doing amazing and thank you to everyone who contributed to the surgery. As soon as she is 6 months post op, she will have a solid idea of what the final result is and will begin education on the topic. We did not raise all the money we needed, so if you have not yet donated, or would like to donate in someone elses name as a gift, please do so through our paypal link. If you are looking for other charities to contrinute to, check out the links from our site or go to www.29gifts.com and tell Cami you’re friends with Elysia Skye :-)

Seeing my arm for the first time after surgery
Seeing my arm for the first time after surgery

12 hours after surgery
12 hours after surgery

Hi everyone! We are a little over a month out of my surgery and my arm is doing great. I have noticed that caffine, sodium and alcohol do make it swell. So, I am doing my best to limit those things in my diet. It is very amazing and calming to not have to worry about compression anymore. Even with all the activity I have started up again, my arm looks really great. It basically looks as small as when I would wear compression and then take it off (but without the lines from the spaghetti foam). The green dye that was supposed to last for months and months was gone in 2 weeks! My doctor said that’s because the surgery worked so well and my vascular and lymph system dumped it out very quickly, faster than most patients.  We have our fingers crossed that it will be about 100% healed in the next 5 months. Patience is a virtue I am working very hard on adapting to my belief system :-)

I will add a gallery for all of this very soon.

Thank you again for your love and support! As far as fundraising went, we raised about half the money. If you have not yet donated, please do so on paypal to donate@elysiaskye.org or send a check to PO Box 4573, Valley Village, CA 91617.

Love and Gratitude,

Elysia Skye

November 25th 2008

Elysia Skye will be on tv tomorrow for a show called THAT MOMENT. Her bit is probably about a minute long, so tune in 5pm or 8pm pacific time. Here is the trailer.

Thank you very much Robyn Migel for setting this up :-)

November 8th 2008

Hi everyone,

i just got home from the hospital today and i can already see some results from my surgery!

im typing slowly with my left hand and rockin my painkillers, so bare with me here.

my arm is in a splint that i have to keep straight for two weeks. Certain everyday tasks are difficult, but my boyfriend KC and my roommate Paul are by my side to make sure i dont screw this up by trying to dress myself or anything CRAZY like that :-)

i went in for surgery at 6am on Wednesday november 5th and was given the happy white sleepy juice at 8am. my operation lasted 10 hours! DrBlack spent an extra two hours in my hand trying to find my stubborn veins. He was able to make 12 successful anastamosis from my lymph vessel to my veins. By the end of surgery, my pinky and ring-finger had shrunk down to their normal size, matching my left hand! He expects my hand and wrist to look almost perfect in the next few weeks and the forearm and upper arm might take a few months to catch up.

i got to take a quick peak today when he swapped out my bandaging. My middle finger has also shrunk down, along with the right side of my hand and my wrist. The entire arm looked as though i had been wearing compression, but hadnt worn it in 4 days! Before this surgery it would have been twice as big, if not bigger and its only get better! i do have green dye on my skin that was injected before surgery to light up my veins, but now my arm is peeing it out and doc says it might last for a few months. It reminds me of when my cat preston fell asleep on a green sharpie.

Being in the hospital for 3 days made me a little stir crazy, but KC was by my side 24/7 making me laugh and tending to my every need and want. i had plenty of visitors and ate more chocolate covered strawberries than any post op patient probably should.

Donations are still pouring in, and i am extremely grateful for all of the friends family and strangers that have unconditionally given to my cause. i have big plans for my book and non profit, so check the website to find out more very soon!

i hope to see you this saturday night from 8-9pm at IMPROV OLYMPIC in Hollywood at the main stage. My good friend Phil Lamar (madtv, family guy, pulp fiction, kim possible) will be improving with the 313, detroit city natives rocking some long form for elysiaskye.org! Special guest Colton Dunn from MadTv will also be performing. You can buy tix ahead of time at www.iowest.com. Please pass this info on and bring as many people as you can please. The flyer is attached.

I love you and hope to talk to you soon. If you reply back, give me a few days to respond. im still learning this left handed thing. Also click the media section of the site to hear our new PSA that is playing on 5 different south florida stations!

Hugs and Gratitude,

Elysia Skye

“Die From Laughing, Not From Cancer.”

November 4th 2008

Even though, as a non profit owner I am not allowed to encourage either side of the election, i am VERY happy that Barack Obama is our new president elect! This means positive change for healthcare, middleclass and hopefully our troops will be back in the states by March!

I am also very excited to be having surgery first thing in the morning to correct my lymphedema. I’ll be at the Little Company of Mary Hospital in Torrance from Wednesday to Saturday. We did not quite raise the $30,000 we needed, the rough estimate we raied since we began is $12,000, which is still pretty great! That is almost half!!! There will be another fundraiser on November 15th and one on December 30th, and I believe we can still raise this amount.  Dr.James Black has offered and promised to not send me to collections if i cannot pay the balance, but the hospital will not be so kind and I do not know yet what to expect from them regarding my copay.  Regardless, I am not at all worried about it.  My focus is on healing and spreading awareness about this new found cure.

Things are in the works right now for publishing my book. I am asking everyone to please send positive thoughts our way for a great deal and an educational book tour. I Got My Tits Done In Beverly Hills is a unique story full of lessons for young women and anyone in a relationship with someone who has cancer. Proving that anything is possible when you learn to have control over your body, your thoughts and your life.

Thank you again to everyone who has supported this cause. We will continue pushing the envelope with insurance companies so that cancer patients do not have to fight for rights that should be given to them.

Wow, last night was incredible! After we finally got inside CIA, it was a magical evening and I am so very grateful to those of you who came, who saw, who laughed and who rocked out!  Especially to Blanca for cutting 8 inches of her hair on stage last night!!! Pictures and videos from the event will be available very soon.  A special thank you to the Changing for collaborating their single release party with The Elysia Skye Breast Cancer Organization.  To support them, please go to http://www.massdistro.com/thechanging.html and buy the new single for only $1.19, which features Jonathan Davis from Korn on backing vocals.  If anyone would like more info on laughaboutcancer.org, John Fugelsang, Cinnamon Stix or The Changing, just message me and I’ll be happy to put you in touch with them.

The hair we cut is being donated to BEAUTIFUL LENGTHS by Pantene who accepts 8 inch ponytails or longer. http://www.beautifullengths.com/en_US/

Coming up is CANCERPALOOZA at Molly Malone’s on May 19th from 8pm-9pm.  This event benefits STUPID CANCER: I’m Too Young For This, which raises awareness regarding cancer in people under 40. The creator, Matthew Zachary, is also a cancer survivor and he and I have teamed up and will be doing projects together in the future. For now, i will be attending the event and hope you will too.

Again, thank you everyone who came and donated, bought shirts and appreciated great music. We have a couple big projects in the works and every little bit helps.

Hugs and Gratitude,
Elysia Skye

October was awesome! We raised over $11,000!  That also means we’re $19,000 short. On the bright side, the Kojis and El Cid fundraisers were amazing.  Thank you again to Dana Gould, Matt Braunger, Mo Collins, The Gangsta Queen, Dave Hill and the Armando team at IO West. A special thanks to Michael at El Cid, Nick Morris at Kojis and everyone who has donated so far!

I had my pre-op consultation with Dr.Black and he promised he won’t be sending me to the poor house.  Whatever we cannot raise will be billed and he won’t send me to collections. The hospital is another story, so keep those dollars coming and spread the good word please.  Another fundraiser currently going on is the Pirate Painting by Sarah Kushner on ebay! She has donated this very beautiful  painting with all proceeds going to our cause.

I will be unable to use my right hand for two weeks as of this wednesday, so for those of you who will be donating, please give me a couple weeks to send out my thank yous.  I will be at the Little Company of Mary Hospital in Torrance from Wed the 5th to Saturday the 6th. Insurance approved 4 nights, but I’m hoping I’ll get out on good behavior :-)  My doctor said I won’t be in any pain, but I’ll be BORED.  He wants to make sure I don’t move or use my right hand/arm for quite some time. For those of you who know me, that’s going to be a very difficult task, but I promise to be good and stay still until this is fully healed. If i i mess this up, that will be my biggest forgiveness lesson to this day! Fingers crossed! Well, atleast on my left hand.

Love and hugs,

Elysia Skye

October 20th 2008 – PRESS RELEASE

The Elysia Skye Breast Cancer Organization

“Die from Laughing, Not from Cancer.”

Writer, Producer, Actress and Breast Cancer Survivor Elysia Skye launches non-profit with celebratory fundraisers to spread awareness, support and cure for Lymphedema. Fundraiser #1 starts tomorrow staring Dana Gould.

Thom Filicia and Elysia Skye on location for “Dress my Nest” July 2008

LOS ANGELES (October 20, 2008) – The Elysia Skye Breast Cancer Organization officially opens its doors with its first project already set in motion, a fundraiser to spread awareness, support and a cure for Lymphedema. “Cancer Cabaret” takes place Tuesday, October 21, 2008 from 7-9pm at El Cid in Silverlake and stars comedic genius Dana Gould and a host of other very funny people.

Lymphedema

Lymphedema, also known as lymphatic obstruction, is a condition of localized fluid retention caused by a compromised lymphatic system, a direct result of the treatment of breast cancer. It attacks the circulatory system and causes intense swelling and debilitation in those affected.

“Lymphedema is a physically and emotionally difficult condition to cope with,” said Jodi Winicour, P.T., C.M.T., Certified Lymphedema Therapist- LANA, an experienced physical therapist and instructor for the treatment of lymphedema. “Many patients tell me that their lymphedema is much more upsetting to them than dealing with the cancer itself and it’s very difficult to find a doctor to care for those with lymphedema, as the information available about this disease is limited. Some physicians view it as a cosmetic issue, ignoring the psychosocial and physical effects.  Furthermore, some physicians still prescribe outdated treatments that are no longer the ‘standard of care’ for lymphedema, and can actually worsen it. Treating the condition can be quite expensive as most insurance companies cover only a portion of what is necessary to properly care for these individuals.”

Die from Laughing, Not from Cancer

Skye was diagnosed with stage-3 breast cancer just after her 24th birthday.  After undergoing a double mastectomy, 18 weeks of intravenous chemotherapy, 5 ½ weeks of radiation and reconstructive surgeries, she was still fighting.

Skye documented her experience through her novel, “I Got My Tits Done In Beverly Hills,” and via a 15 minute short film called “Lose Weight With Cancer” to encourage other sufferers to somehow see the light through the trauma. She was also recently featured on “Dress My Nest” with Thom Filicia.

Skye was then diagnosed with Lymphedema and has robbed her of full use of her right arm. The surgery she needs to live a normal life is offered only in 3 places in the world Italy, Japan and Orange County, CA. Upon being referred to a lymphedema specialist, Skye thought she would be in the clear until her health insurance presented an obstacle. Due to total lack of information on the disease, the health industry considers the debilitating effects of lymphedema to be cosmetic and “not medically necessary.” The $30,000 surgery isn’t yet covered while expensive, physically and emotionally draining treatments such as physical therapy, acupuncture, compression wraps, etc., none of which are a cure and in a lifetime well exceed $30,000.

“Blue Cross denied my entire claim initially deeming the surgery medically unnecessary and experimental until me, and my entire medical team including Dr. James Black fought to have the decision overturned,” said Skye. “We were successful in proving the surgery isn’t experimental, is medically necessary and have reached an agreement for “out-of-network” coverage. Just how much will be covered, we’ve yet find out.”

Lymphedema Statistics

Around 50% of breast cancer survivors end up with lymphedema which adds up to between three and five million people suffering with the condition in the US alone.  Filariasis is the parasite form of lymphedema, which affects 120 million worldwide, according to the World Health Organization.

The Elysia Skye Breast Cancer Organization and Current Fundraisers

Through continual hard work and dedication to finding cures for both breast cancer and lymphedema and to bringing support and enlightenment to those suffering from these diseases, the Elysia Skye Breast Cancer Organization is determined to raise awareness and change policies in order to provide a cure over treatment. Skye is currently asking for a $1 donation from 30,000 people in order to fund the groundbreaking surgery, the results of which could mean a cure for thousands of people around the world.

“I plan to raise the $30,000 and more to prove that there is a cure for lymphedema and there is no reason for so many to be suffering from it unnecessarily,” Skye said. “I want to promote a yes we can attitude and provide continual support and hope for those who suffer from and work through disease, treatment, and persevering to find a cure.”

Cancer Cabaret Charity Event, Tuesday October 21, 2008 from 7-9 pm

There will be a live-music fundraiser as well as multiple comedy shows this fall in order to help raise enough money for a November 5th surgery date. The first event, Cancer Cabaret takes place Tuesday, October 21, 2008 from 7-9 pm at El Cid in Sunset Junction in Silverlake. Cover/suggested donation begins at $15. This star studded evening starts with the comedy genius of Dana Gould, followed by Matt Braunger, Gangsta Queen and Mo Collins. Attendees are eligible to win a date with Gangsta Queen. Please stay tuned to www.elysiaskye.org for more information and for ways to donate to the cause.

The most current Elysia Skye interviews can be found in October issues of Los Angeles Family Magazine and Attribute online.

Tomorrow night is the first official fundraiser for my surgery.  The paypal donations and checks in the mail have added up so far to about $4000, which is great for such a short time, but not quite enough to get through November.  I have been doing a lot of press, more than I’m used to.  This month I am going to be featured in LA Family Magazine (my friend Mac Duffy set that up) and I’ll also have an article in Attribute Magazine (they found me from Dress My Nest!).  I had an email correspondance with Stacey, the creator for Attribute, and I thought I’d copy my answers into this blog.  You’ll see some of this info in the article, but here’s a sneak peak :-)

Love and Gratitude,

Elysia Skye
S: What was your initial reaction when you found out you had cancer.

E: I took a deep breathe and decided to kick cancer’s ass.  I was scared about what I would look like, how I would be able to afford treatment and time off work, if my acting career would be effected and if my boyfriend would stick by me.  I quickly reminded myself that I am a determined person, I am a spiritual being and that I am a creator. I was going to be fine. I just had to remember to keep breathing, and try to laugh as often as possible.

S: Did you have a role model while going through treatment is was it the lack of someone your age to look to which led you to be that person for others?

E: My role model was my mother. She passed away when I was 12, and she gave me the strength to carry through any tragedy or trauma.  She had MS and was a teacher and a healer.  She was a loving mother, sister and friend to hundreds of people.

S: What has been the reaction to your video  “Lose Weight with Cancer” and what led you to go there?

E: I have gotten nothing but positive reviews from men and women of all ages. There is something for everyone in this film.  I was inspired while undergoing treatment, after losing my hair and 20 pounds. I was wearing a tight dress and a bobbed wig when I ran into an old friend who didn’t know I had been diagnosed.  He hugged me in excitement, telling me I looked amazing! Asked if i had been working out and whatever i was doing, keep it up.
That was the beginning of the laughter that has continued every day. His name is Spanky. Of course!

S: Who were you before cancer-did you have the same outlook or did this experience totally change your perspective of the world.

E: My friend Jenn says I have always been a gypsy, so I haven’t changed so much as far as my positive outlook on life, but now I have stronger spiritual beliefs regarding forgiveness and manifestation.  I believe we choose our lifes and every detail that comes along with it.  I also have learned how to ask for help, how to receive, and the importance of treating yourself the way you want others to treat you.

S: What is the most touching part of your fund raising?

E: I am constantly overwhelmed at the generosity of acquaintances and strangers. People who have no idea who I am are sending paypal cash and checks in the mail.  They have read my story and told me I am inspiring them! THEY are inspiring ME!  My close friends are there for me over and over. I don’t take any of it for granted. I am loved.

E: Words of advice for other’s with cancer?

You have made this choice. You created this. Now you can un-create it.  Reflect on how you emotionally handle stress and fear. If it hasn’t already, your attitude needs to change now.  Cancer is curable, as long as your attitude is flexible. Laugh, love and receive.

S:  How did you land on Style My Nest and how was that experience. Did you keep things the way they designed it after all?

E: I submitted my headshot and short story on an actors website based out of LA.  I had a phone interview, an audition, a producers session and I booked it! The process was not much different than a normal acting job, but I did not go on the air as an actress. I was promoting my book and my organization. I have kept things the way Thom designed them, with a few additions of my old artwork. I can’t live without my Superman posters!

S: That’s about it…I can work wonders with answers to these questions.

E: You’re welcome. This has been fun! I hope we get to meet next time I go to south florida.
Additionally, 93 Rock.com is promoting my site with online banners and giving part of their Halloween charity to my cause. For more info, email Crystal Ganz at crystal.gans@coxradio.com

GOOD NEWS!
My surgeon, Dr. James Black called and spoke directly to the MD at Blue Cross who denied my claim and had the claim reversed. He told the man that this surgery has been done many times in the past and HAS been approved by Blue Cross before. SO now, they are giving me an out of network percentage. The surgery is billed to blue cross at $40,000 (not including hospital fees). Out of network cost is generally about 40% coverage, so I still need $30,000 plus to get through this. Hospitals can bill upwards of $40,000 just for the facilities and staff (not to mention I’ll be spending 3-5 nights there). Long story short, this surgery could wind up being $80,000+
So let’s keep the donations coming! It has been an amazing first week. I’ve raised about $4000 in 7 days! However, to get where we need by November 5th, we have to keep fundraising. My publicist Lon Haber is sending out a press release in efforts to get media attention. OPRAH, WHERE ARE YOU?!?! :-)
I have been overwhelmed with the generosity, kindness and love of my friends, family and for the most part, complete strangers who have reached out to be a part of my cause.
Recently, my surgeon’s assistant met with the Japanese surgeon and Italian surgeon (the only other two people in the WORLD who perform venous anastamosis for lymphedema) and discussed the future of this surgery. This is amazing and I can’t wait to share my results with lymphedema PT’s and oncologists worldwide.
Thank you again to everyone who had contributed.
93 Rock in Florida has offered to put out a few PSAs on the station and are also planning to throw a charity fundraiser on Halloween. If you live in the Florida area, please check my events page for more information near the end of October. Thank you Crystal Gans of 93 rock!
Love,
Elysia

BLUE CROSS JUST DENIED MY ENTIRE CLAIM!

9/19/2008 5:38PM

My doctor told me that they usually do cover it up to 60%, but there is always a chance they wont so raise they money just in case.
So i am raising the money just in case, with the hopes they will cover 60% and if i raise all the money (which I WILL), i can use it to publish the information and spread the word internationally about this cure that nobody seems to know about!
I also wanted to donate to other women fighting breast cancer without insurance. So be it if i have to use all the money on this surgery, but for them to deem this surgery NOT MEDICALLY NECESSARY who the hell do they think they are?! They pay for my physical therapy every week at $750 a treatment but something that will end this vicious cycle isn’t medically necessary? Between the weekly PT and my compression gloves ($550 a piece, need 4 a year) I will be saving them tons of money over my lifetime! They are so incorrect and I feel terrible for women being turned down for things like this who don’t have the energy to fight. It’s discouraging having the powers that be say NO when it comes to your health when you pay them out the ass every friggin month.
They messed with the wrong chick. I want to encourage doctors to learn this procedure and it doesn’t help when nobody can pay for it!
I have lots more to say about this. This is bigger than me and my arm. This is for the good of thousands of lymphedema patients.

and vote OBAMA for Christs Sake!!! (thought I’d throw that in there while I was passionate).

Love,
Elysia

Wow, after almost three years since my diagnosis, I finally have a non-profit! I know this website and company will continue to grow and I am very excited to be able to reach out to an unlimited amount of people.  This organization is not just for people who have cancer or who’ve had cancer. This is also for people with family members who have cancer, or if you’re dating or married to someone with cancer, or have a good friend with cancer.  I have met so many interesting, kind hearted brilliant people in the past three years who have inspired me and given me permission to share their websites and stories.  The only way to get what you need or want is to ask for help and make it happen (unless you have tons of money and can hire someone else to do it for you…that’s not what I did unfortunatly).

If you are going through this site and have ideas on how to improve the site or want to know something that is not up here, please email me anytime.  Coming soon will be special events for fundraising, a sexy cancer calendar, and one day a creative cancer center for patients and survivors to continue working, playing, writing and being artistic throughout their recovery. It will also be a holistic healing center and a merch exchange (wigs, lymphadema products, etc.) free of charge to patients currently being treated.  Eventually I would like to create a grant program called “my insurance doesn’t cover this and I think it’s bs!” where we can assist cancer patients in getting treatment and products they need that we do not provide and the government doesn’t feel are “necessary”. This would include everything from spa treatments to reconstructive surgery.  Thank you Dr.Christine Horner for working with Clinton to ensure implants are taken care of.  However, tattooing and lymphadema treatment are still only partially covered.  This is not fair, and I’m not moving to Canada (no offense Canada but I’m pretty fond of California).  Although the 2008 election might inspire a move out of this country – OK I can’t get into that :-) This is a happy blog!

Currently I’m thrilled to have finally met someone who believes he can cure my lymphadema in my right arm between 60% and 95%!  This costs roughly $20,000 and I will need to take a month or more off work (so, more like $25,000).  Because my blue cross PPO only pays 60%, i need to raise between $10k and $15k before November 5th.  Please see the events/fundraising section of the site to see where we’ll be raising these funds.

Lastly, thank you so much to David Phillips (Arkany web design) for working pro-bono to get this site up and going before my surgery.  Another thank you to Amanda at Eagle-Eye edits for your help with my book, “I Got My Tits Done In Beverly Hills” and thank you to Lon Haber for being a very talented and eager publicist, jumpstarting this journey with me. And of course, love and gratitude to all of you.

Sincerely,

Elysia Skye

April 14, 2009

Love and Gratitude,
Elysia Skye

Metal heads like boobies as much as anyone else, if not more so!

From our friend Maureen Rose (Los Angeles). If you don’t live in LA but you’d like to contribute, you can mail dresses/jewlery to her office.

Hi friends! A couple things if you are feeling generous with your time…

This Saturday the 14th 8am – 12pm (only 4 hours!!)
We’re going to do some landscaping in 13 different areas over at Youth Optimist within and around the main campus. The Mayor’s office is providing the supplies for this project, but we need volunteers (food and drinks will be available).
The address is
6957 N. Figueroa Street, PO Box 41-1076
Los Angeles, CA
If landscaping is not your thing, there are other jobs available such as:
o Man a booth to help recruit mentors and volunteers
o Visit various job sites to see if anyone needs water/supplies
o Painting
o Direct parking
o Help at the Welcome table
o Help direct lunch crowd
o Help get teams assembled

For those of you who aren’t familiar with Youth Optimist, please read up, it’s a great organization that I strongly support! http://www.oyhfs.org/

Next…

CASA of Los Angeles – Court Appointed Special Advocates… they provide advocacy for children going through the family court system.

On Saturday March 28th they are having our annual Glamour Gown Event where we provide girls in foster care and group homes Prom Dresses. We treat these girls like princesses for the day. They get assigned a personal shopper (volunteers like you and me) and peruse donated gowns to find the right one for them, as well as jewelry and other accessories. This is such a special day for these girls!!! AND it’s fun!!! Jess…you would be awesome at something like this!! And the girls get such a boost of confidence seeing themselves all decked out and actually have something to look forward to…looking amazing at their Prom!!

They set up on Friday the 27th of March at the convention center – and take everything down on Sunday March the 29th – They really could use some guys on those days. But I would say only females the day of the 28th so that we don’t make them feel uncomfortable changing and such. O and NO ONE under 18!! They don’t want these girls embarrassed in front of their peers!!!

The volunteer coordinator is Tracee Wilkes – please email her if you are interested in volunteering and she can give you the particulars. Her email is tbwilks@gmail.com. But let me know as well so we can go together!!

I’ve attached the CASA Fact Sheet to give you a little more info on this organization.

Hope you will come. It is truly a touching day. If you can’t make it (ladies) if you have ANY old dresses from PROM or Bridesmaid dresses (I think I had about 8 of those last year to donate hahaha) PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE make a girls day and donate!!! They accept shoes and jewelry as well. And if you could ask around to your friends and coworkers, they may want to get rid of some stuff – and you can just drop it off for me at Osbrink!!

Pass this onto friends if you know of people who want to help and please let me know asap if you plan on volunteering for either event so I can let the appropriate people know. Love you guys and thanks for your consideration on this.

Micro-Surgery Fundraisers!

In October 2008, we will be raising $30,000 to cure Elysia Skye of the very limiting lymphedema in her right arm. Because 22 lymph nodes were removed during her mastectomy in 2005, her right hand and arm began to swell roughly two months after the surgery (and very soon after her auxiliary web syndrome was cured). For almost three years, she has been living with a very swollen arm and hand that she has to wrap with compression bandages on a daily basis, and receive weekly physical therapy and acupuncture to maintain a somewhat tolerable level of swelling. Not only are these treatments time consuming, they are very expensive. Additionally, a fat arm does not look good on camera! Lymphedema is an ailment that is not studied often and if this surgery proves successful, it will hopefully encourage other doctors to learn this microsurgical procedure. Currently they only doctors practicing venous asatamosis are Dr.James Black in Torrance, CA and two other doctors in Italy and Japan. Dr.James Black studied at MD Anderson in Texas. So it is possible for other surgeons to learn this procedure in the U.S. The problem is the medical industry hardly talks about it! For more information on this procedure, please visit http://www.lymphedemapeople.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=1099 or google search venus anastamosis.

On set for Back on Topps

Elysia's arm is very swollen in this photo taken in May of 2008. She weighs the same as she did in the photo from 2005, but her arm adds 10 pounds to the photo before the camera has a chance!
